What I do

Engineering work that holds up.

These are the areas I work in and the value I bring to a team. My experience spans architecture and system design, full-stack delivery, cloud and DevOps, and the senior judgement to know which battles are worth fighting. Scroll to explore each area, or jump straight to the one that matters most.

Area 01

Software Architecture & System Design

Turning fuzzy requirements into systems that are simple to reason about, cheap to change, and built to outlive their first deadline.

  • Domain modelling and bounded-context design that maps to how the business actually works
  • API and contract design: clear boundaries, explicit types, versioning that does not break clients
  • Architecture decision records so every trade-off is documented, not folklore
  • Pragmatic choice between monolith, modular monolith, and services — sized to the team
  • Migration strategies that ship value incrementally instead of betting on a big-bang rewrite

Area 02

Full-Stack Web Development

Production-grade web applications end to end — typed back ends, fast front ends, and the boring reliability work that keeps them up.

  • TypeScript across the stack: Node/Deno services, React/Astro front ends
  • Database design and query tuning (PostgreSQL) with explicit transaction boundaries
  • Accessible, performance-budgeted UI that ships zero unnecessary JavaScript
  • Test strategy that targets behaviour, not coverage vanity metrics
  • Clean structural separation and modular design so the codebase stays workable

Area 03

Cloud & DevOps

Infrastructure as code, reproducible deployments, and pipelines that make shipping a non-event rather than a ritual.

  • Infrastructure as code with Terraform — no click-ops, fully reviewable
  • Containerised workloads on Kubernetes or lightweight container hosts, right-sized to load
  • CI/CD pipelines with fast feedback, gated releases, and trivial rollback
  • Observability baked in: structured logs, metrics, traces, and meaningful alerts
  • Cost and security review of a cloud footprint, with concrete remediation

Area 04

Technical Leadership

Senior engineering judgement applied to architecture reviews, technical due diligence, and mentoring that lifts a whole team.

  • Architecture and code reviews with actionable, prioritised findings
  • Technical due diligence for products, acquisitions, or investment decisions
  • Mentoring and pairing that raises the whole team, not just the ticket
  • Roadmap and tech-debt triage: what to fix now, what to live with, what to retire
  • Plain-language translation between engineering reality and business stakeholders

Area 05

Performance & Reliability Engineering

Finding where systems actually hurt — latency, throughput, flakiness — and fixing the root cause, not the symptom.

  • Profiling and load testing to locate the real bottleneck before touching code
  • Database and query optimisation: indexing, N+1 elimination, connection pooling
  • Caching strategy and edge delivery that hold up under real traffic
  • Reliability work: graceful degradation, backpressure, sensible timeouts and retries
  • Post-incident reviews that produce fixes and runbooks, not blame
